BELL COUNTY MUSEUM IS NEW HOME TO BENNETT CURTIS COLLECTION

Long-time historian Bennett Curtis has donated her extensive collection of materials relating to Temple's African-American community to the Bell County Museum.

The collection includes trophies from Dunbar High School, newspaper clippings and photographs of Temple's African-American businesses, educators and philanthropists.  Individuals such as Cora Anderson, Charles E. ("Mean Joe") Greene, Curtis B. Elliott, and many others are included in the collection.

"I wanted to place this material in the Bell County Museum to allow individuals, students, and interested researchers the opportunity to learn about African-American contributions to our city," said Mrs. Curtis.  " Because I serve on the Collections Committee at the museum, I knew that they have a limited amount of material on Central Texas African-American history.  My goal is to give others a new insight into local accomplishments and achievements."

Museum Director Stephanie Turnham said, "We are thrilled with Bennett's contribution.  The material will become part of our permanent collection.  Since much of the gift consists of works on paper, copies will be available for study in our Research Center.  Of course, the public is welcome to view the original material by making an appointment with our curator, and the material will be placed on exhibit from time to time."

The museum's other holdings related to the region's African-American community include objects from Harris High School donated by Connie Demerson of Belton, objects relating to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Kinchion family of Belton, and Oral Histories of African-Americans in Bell County, 2004 and 2006.  The museum is the repository for the Center for African-American History and Research at Central Texas College and Texas A & M University Central Texas (formerly Tarleton State University - Central Texas).
